Thank you for this. I’m having trouble expressing my rage and anguish. I’m frustrated sitting in my privileged suburban home and wondering how to educate my children about what’s happening and the best way to help and be of service. I’m so angry at the cowardice and bs spewing from Republican leaders and goons who claim to love country and have stolen the image of our flag, but don’t understand its significance. These goons have no idea the bravery, courage and love of country of the folks who died on the island or are taking up arms now in Ukraine. Spewing hatred on Twitter or wearing a gun to intimidate is not bravery. It’s cowardice. I’m in awe of the Ukrainian people. War for an egomaniac…I don’t understand and I’m not sure I want to. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for this. Yes, we should be absolutely f---ing furious. Putin will rot in hell but that doesn't help the brave men and women of Ukraine right now. I will donate to a reputable organization helping Ukraine to show my support.
I have read your blog for years and years and enjoyed your content for free and recommended you to all my friends and never put my money behind any of it until I found myself reading your (free) newsletter and crying my eyes out. I am now a subscriber. Please keep writing.
“We have been taught to think of crying as weakness; an embarrassing display of emotion. We were taught wrong. When you see a woman weeping as she watches the news, be warned: She is not sad. She is angry. She is fucking furious.”
Gabrielle, you put these complex emotions into such clear words. As always, I appreciate your response to what’s happening. Feeling so angry, sad, and scared for our world.
I’ve followed you for years with pleasure. Today I’m stepping up my support because this piece was so powerful in articulating a muddle of feelings—is a muddle a thing? that many of us are grappling with, but first and foremost the utter waste and destruction and stupidity of war. Trump, the pandemic and now a war. It’s hard to collapse in despair but that takes privilege so thank you for giving voice to my frustration and despair.
I tutor a 12-yo girl in St. Petersburg and a 26-yo man in Novosibirsk (English classes). They and their families have become my friends via our Zoom classes even though we are thousands of miles and many time zones apart. Today the mom and I were texting -- me sending my concerns and prayers to her, she responding with "Did you get the PayPal payment? We will pay you every class now [instead of monthly]. We'll see you at ... if we still have Internet." Oh my god. All of this trauma -- and tragedy -- for one man's ego. I hate feeling at a loss for action but am so grateful that I can know first-hand some good people struggling under his regime. "Only love can conquer hate"
I love that you wrote this, and I agree 100%. Except that I would add that actually Putin does have a reason to be waging a war of conquest against Ukraine, and it has to do with the many rich resources Ukraine has -- uranium, titanium, iron, and a whole lot more. So it's not for no reason; it's for greed and power. It's the megalomaniacal power grab of Putin and Trump, and as you so correctly pointed out, almost the whole of the GOP. And it IS truly terrifying. Even, yes, here in America. Thank you always Gabrielle, for your clear, strong voice of intelligence and conviction.
Of course throws Trump and the Republican Party under the bus. Wild that you think 41% want civil war and daydream about killing fellow Americans. WILD.
I think you misread. It's 41 million (not percent) who believe in the Qanon conspiracy theory - that's 16% of Americans. An alarming number, TBH. And one of the tenets of Qanon is that violence may be necessary to overthrow what they think of as elite pedophiles who are running the country. Talk about f---- dumb! And Trump. He's been openly supporting Putin since the invasion which seems traitorous to me And he withheld aid to Ukraine in order to get dirt on Joe Biden - so he's certainly a big part of the problem here.
I agree, Jenna. I think your percentages are not accurate, Gabrielle
…and please stop throwing Trump, the GOP, white supremacy into all of this. War sucks and this has been Putin’s plan forever. I respect your opinions but you seem to have such hatred for those that aren’t liberal.
Well stated Gabrielle. War is fucking dumb, there is nothing dumber! When I hear the news say that Putin may have committed war crimes, I'm incredulous... may have? He fucking invaded the second largest country in Europe, unprovoked. He's a war criminal and must answer to the court for his crimes against humanity. He must lose all his power, forever. He must be made an example of to deter other dictators who think they can own the world.
I've been a sister supporter through Women for Women International for 2 decades, and I'm sure that Ukraine will be added to the the countries served. WWI helps women whose lives have been impacted by war. I wish to see countries removed from this list, not added!
What you wrote, about the distance between Paris and Kyiv really shocked me. Mentally it seems like a huge distance: through the rest of France, Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, and then halfway through Ukraine. But it’s less than the distance from NYC to Denver.

War is fucking dumb, the dumbest thing ever!
