I did set up accounts on Mastadon and CounterSocial, but I'm really upset at the probable loss of the whole ecosystem of follows/blocks/mutes that I have been building since 2008 on Twitter.

I have never really used, or liked Twitter much, though I’ve respected what it has done for free thinking and certain types of careers/writers/artists/leaders. Perhaps because I’m a visual learner/ thinker and Twitter doesn’t have that element--and/or because I worry about how much time some young people spend arguing and defaming others on these platforms. However, as usual your take has widened my thinking. thank you for that. I’m holding all social platforms with an open hand for the moment and feeling grateful for what they’ve brought so many of us, at their best.

After months of hemming and days of hawing (ie weeding my follows down yo the essentials to determine if staying was worth it), and then finally thirty seconds of deliberation and mental cataloging of the other places I could access all my favorite follows, I deleted the app from my phone this morning after EM told everyone to vote Republican. Funny what finally does it. I didn’t deactivate my account yet, but I might as well have since I only Twitter on my phone.

I am enjoying Mastadon. It feels like the early days when people were just interested in chatting with others. I also like that you can block entire servers if need be.

I loved it for news from respected journalists and others. I have not deactivated because it says if done we can’t go on with the same personal information again. It says to rather change our present account to different info, etc and then deactivate. I want my moniker to continue as I have it so thus far scared to just deactivate. What do you think??

Scotland looks amazing. My Bell ancestors all came from there, and i hope to visit one day. I feel like I'm stating the obvious re leaving Twitter, but what about Reddit?

Thank you: as ever, you've expressed it so well. The random joy and learning of Twitter and now the punch-to-the gut (sad) feeling of having a big toddler come in and break all the toys. And welcome home from Scotland! What a magisterial photo!

I’m sad regarding Elon’s takeover of Twitter, as well. I’ve set up an account on Mastadon but haven’t tried to familiarize myself with it yet. Darn, I hate change. ☺️

I have never used Twitter. I have an account, but have spent less than an hour on it…never understood it and never was inclined to take the time to learn. So…it means not a lot to me…but I know you like and use it, so I am sorry!

Yes, to everything here. I am an introvert, living on a rural property in a small "red" town in a blue state. I was once a woman living on a Southern California street who knew every neighbor and loved visiting with them while on my walks, and then returning home to my quiet courtyard. Twitter gives me that same feeling of community now, but even better, for all of the reasons you stated so perfectly. And during this pandemic time that goes on and on for me, as a person with auto-immune conditions, Twitter is my connection to the outside world in a way that is more "real" than Instagram. I don't want it to go away and I don't want to have to rebuild, and I don't understand why a billionaire had to ruin everything. Btw I am @wordygirl11 everywhere--I feel as I should say this always now, in case anyone has to come looking for me in new places. Sigh.

Elon is unblocking people by the thousands who had blocked him.

Mourning over here, too, oddly. Twitter has been such a big, fun ride, one that I can't even explain. I wrote my own little goodbye, lamenting what will be missed. Can we not have nice things?! https://medium.com/@lisareneeh/rip-twitter-b05de7d508b2
