In this newsletter: What the book editing process was like, a quick report on our house full of 11 people, and a fun announcement about Alt Summit, the conference I put on.
Love this. I am an academic editor and I know the process can feel grueling. My advice to authors is to remember that other than style consistency, which is set by the publisher, the author is the final decision maker. I’m glad you pushed back where appropriate or used the feedback to better clarify any potential misreading of your point. I know that I am looking forward to reading your book when it comes out!
I've always wondered what the difference is between an editor and a copy editor- this made it so much clearer to me than when I've googled it! Very interesting to get insight on what happens behind-the-scenes for a book to be published!
I pre-ordered your new book IMMEDIATELY, and let me tell you I have never done that so fast before in my life. I can’t wait for it! Also, as a copy/line editor myself, I am delighted when authors and content creators like you inform the public about what we do, the different types of editing and editors, etc., so thank you for that service! I love reading about your process with this book, and more people should know about things like that. It helps aspiring writers (which I also am) so much.
As a COPY editor ... I really enjoyed you enlightening so many about what happens in publishing! It's usually not the kind of work anyone cares to hear about. Many people are defensive when it comes to their writing or spelling or grammar (assuming it's not "up to par"), and I've learned to keep my mouth shut before I offer any corrections or suggestions (outside of work). Still, I love trying to make someone's writing as clear and as perfectly written as possible -- so I'll be here going at it! (Also already pre-ordered your book; I'm so curious to see how it's expanded from your Tweet!)
Such an interesting post about the process 0f writing your book--can't wait to read more!
THANKS!
