I am nervous about the border as well. My husband just naturalized in May 2024 (thank GOD). He is thinking of returning to his home country to visit his parents, and I'm not sure if I should be worried about it or not. He does not really use social media (he's sort of a lurker, doesn't even really like things and never comments). I hope that means my fears are unfounded. Be careful, Gabrielle!
Glad you mentioned Adolescence. It is definitely a must see! I feel very lucky to have grown up pre-computers and smartphones, and that my kids mostly did too.
We have close friends who are Israeli and fly back and forth several times a year; they say that profiling is "just a given" when going through Israeli customs. In Israel, those with a passport from an Arab or predominantly Muslim country are more likely to get pulled aside for further questioning than middle-aged white ladies from the US, because that's where the threat is perceived.
But here in the US ... wow. I can't think of anything more authoritarian than perceiving the threat as a lack of loyalty.
My husband and I just cancelled plans to go to Canada in June. Can you imagine? Afraid to go to Canada? I’m a 73 year old white woman. Obviously, I do not have a big online presence, but I have been posting anti Trump material for eight years, and who knows what border security would do? Also, if the US invades Canada, it could be dangerous because of that. This is all such fear based bull shit that I can’t believe we’re living through. Even I had no idea how bad it was going to be.
Also, it was so delightful meeting you at your SLC book signing. I actually marveled that you were so relaxed and articulate, when you should have been exhausted!
I had tickets to see you at Zibby's and had something come up with my daughter (I'm her primary caregiver, and she is severely disabled) and am just so bummed to have missed seeing you in person. I've followed you from the start of your blog, and you even posted a very amateur video I made for parents of newly diagnosed children that, of course, rocketed up in views. Anyway, this is to say that I remain a deep admirer and supporter and hope to eventually meet in person one of these days --
Thank you for letting me know. I've been hearing about this from lots of people and have been discussing it on my IG Stories. There's a highlight called "Censored?" if you'd like to read what has been shared.
Just finished Careless People. The fact that Meta blocked the promotion of the book says so much. I am embarrassed that I was so surprised by so much of what was presented. I knew but still just didn’t know or didn’t understand the depth of how uncaring Meta execs are outside of profit and power.
Sadly, it is legal. Patriot Act. Anywhere within 100 miles of the border on on or accessing public transportation, I believe. Use a burner phone when you travel. Leave your real I e hone. Only way to positively avoid intrusion into your privacy.
It’s always a breath of fresh air to read what you post, even when there are such heavy topics to cover. Bless you! I’m rooting for you and safe travels back to the states.
I'm with you on being nervous about flying back to the US. Not sure I plan to for as long as this regime is in power. Sure, you could fly with a burner phone --- but what good does that do for anyone who has been public about their resistance and views?
I'm thinking the same thing. Sure I can remove my social media apps or fly with a burner phone, but any search of my name will bring up public resistance.
Gabby, can you share a link to your most recent update on your… forgive my mush brain, was it cousins whose children were taken from them by CPS like a year ago? Now that I'm gone from Twitter, I lost that thread.

Please check out the ACLU website for guidance.
Thank you for another great read. Best of luck getting back and forth from France to the US next week.

Oh my goodness! No wonder you were exhausted!

Hoping your travels are smooth and uneventful! Glad you got some good rest.

You were missed!
Hi Gabby
Just an FYI I tried to like/comment on your threads & I am not able to. That is a first for me.
I can still post on your Design Mom
Interesting

Right? I think I expected that the carelessness would be more unintentional.
How is it even legal to look through someone’s phone!?

I'm sure we're both on some sort of "list". We've definitely typed "a-b-o-r-t-i-o-n" a few too many times.
