At Our House
Hello there! I have the holidays on my mind today. Specifically Thanksgiving. Our oldest daughter Maude is here! She hasn’t been home for Thanksgiving in many years, so this feels like a treat. It will also be Oscar’s first Thanksgiving away from home. He is staying in Ireland (he’s attending university there), and having a Friendsgiving meal with fellow students.
It’s also one of those unusual Novembers where we get like a whole week of November after Thanksgiving. I think I like it with that extra week — I think it maybe makes the holidays stretch out a little longer. How about you?
Speaking of Maude, she has been showing up in recent renovation updates (we have working plumbing! we stained the floors with rusty vinegar! we painted the loft railings!). You can find updates in my Instagram highlights.
Here Are A Few Things I’ve Wanted to Share With You
The news is so hard right now and a lot of the these articles are heavy — so I also included a recent SNL sketch that I’ve watched at least ten times and it makes me laugh every time.
From the Washington Post (gift link) —Terror on Repeat: A rare look at the devastation caused by AR-15 shootings.
From Slate — Here’s the Thing About that “New” Supreme Court Ethics Code.
From the Daily Beast —A Financial profile on the shady new Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson.
From Axios — Hundreds of people are spending tens of millions of dollars to install a pre-vetted, pro-Trump army of up to 54,000 loyalists across the government.
From Qasim Rashid —
From Movement of Mothers — 'We implicitly believe that men have the right to a certain amount of violence. Our laws may pretend that we don’t, but the application of these laws demonstrate we do. It is within this environment that the idea of “parental alienation” has thrived.'
From Pro-Publica — Years ago, the all-white judges of a Louisiana appellate court decided, in secret, to systematically ignore petitions filed by prisoners, most of them Black, who claimed they had been unjustly convicted.
From the Design Matters podcast — Kara Swisher talks about Elon Musk, “The electric vehicle stuff, the space stuff is really interesting and really important. And then there’s this part of him that has now taken over his brain almost completely. I think he’s just turned, turned bad.”
From Forbes — Gender Bias In The Courts: Women Are Not Believed.
From SNL — A sketch about George Washington imagining future America. Made me laugh so hard.

Click here to register. Choose Individual Ticket, then register with the code AltBlackFriday to get $200 off!
Take note: Ticket prices will increase to $945 on December 1st. Sale ends midnight, November 24th. No refunds or price adjustments.

Thank you for your voice, your compassion, continuing to show up and write for all of us.
Your brilliant mind is so very appreciated and I can't tell you the ways I have turned to you and a few others in the storm of heavy heartbreak both for your well thought through wisdom, and yes, some escape looking at the progress of those gorgeous vinegar stain + linseed oiled floors!
May you have a beautiful Thanksgiving with your family. Thank you for the ways you make the world better for thousands.
Thank you for sharing the article on AK47s. I lived 50 minutes from Uvalde when the shooting happened and I’ve never felt so terrified. These photos are gutting. I am a high school teacher and weekly I consider what I would do should a shooter enter the building. We have to go more for our children, our students, and the many souls that teach & care for those children.
