Why am I talking about Alt Summit? Alt Summit is a conference I co-founded and currently run. Here’s some little videos where I talk about Why People Come to Alt Summit, Who Comes to Alt Summit, What You’ll Learn at Alt Summit, and the Value of an Alt Summit Ticket. The conference sells out every year, so if you’re interested in coming, I highly recommend grabbing your ticket asap.
A Few Things
Here are a few things I’ve been wanting to share with you.
- From Slate. What’s happening between the Sound of Freedom guy and the Mormon Church.
- Related, here’s a Twitter thread by Eric Snider (humorist, LDS church member, and church employee) explaining what’s going on.
- From The Cut. Having a kid at the end of the world.
- From Washington Post (I used a gift link, so it’s free to read). Have you noticed that everyone’s teeth are a little too perfect?
- From The Guardian. A review of Walter Isaacson’s book about Elon Musk. Made me laugh (the review, not the book).
- From ProPublica. For twenty years patients warned Columbia that Robert Hadden was a sexual predator. One patient even called 911 and had him arrested. Columbia let him go back to work four days later. More than 245 women have come forward.
- From The New Yorker. Betty Friedan and the Movement That Outgrew Her.
- From Slate. The Woman on the Line. Every day, the calls come. She can tell quickly who might die. I was very moved by this piece.
- From Saks. The beloved Staub casserole set is on major discount again! In six color options. (Do you know Staub? It’s a premium French enameled cast iron cookware and bakeware manufacturer. You can find all the Staub pieces that are currently discounted here.)
- From Vox. Chris Rufo’s dangerous fictions. The right’s leading culture warrior has invented a leftist takeover of America to justify his very real power grabs. (Rufo is the guy that intentionally started putting the phrase “critical race theory” into right wing media and getting people really angry about it.)
- From NPR. Unraveling Long Covid.
I think that’s it for now. Feel free to comment on anything above, or whatever’s on your mind. I hope you’re enjoying these final days of summer. I thought the equinox always happens on September 21 (tomorrow), but the calendar is telling me it’s the 23rd? Clearly I don’t really know how the equinox schedule works. : ) Anyway, I hope this seasonal transition will be a good one for you.
kisses,
Gabrielle
So, I'm a slightly jaded UX designer struggling to find purpose in her work. I'm creative, or at least I was creative, and I desperately want to reclaim that in my life. Regardless of my job title, I want to create for myself, outside the computer, outside of information architecture and wireframes. I left facebook and instagram behind, as I did not like Zuck and his henchmen so I am not on socials as the rest of my cohorts are. I am not a content creator and I'm not looking to document my days that way. So, with all that said, when filling out Alt Summit registration form fields, I can't help but think, "maybe this isn't for me." As in, its not intended for me. Is it?
Regarding the Woman on the Line piece, I listened to the podcast version of this American Life. It is moving and worth a listen.
